Sony sold 7.8 million PS5 platforms
Sony’s operating profit reached 66.5 billion yen ($ 610.8 million), compared to 35.4 billion yen a year ago, supported by demand for games, movies and other content during the Coronavirus pandemic.
The company has benefited from strong demand for the PS5 gaming platform, games, movies and other content as people stayed at home.
The new platform was launched in primary markets in November, and Sony wants to use it to encourage online game downloads and subscription services.
PlayStation Plus subscribers now stand at 47.6 million, an increase of 14.7 percent year-on-year.
Fourth-quarter figures bring total profit from PlayStation operating to 342.2 billion yen ($ 3.14 billion) for the 2020 fiscal year, a record for Sony.
Sony’s latest earnings report reveals that the company has shipped 4.5 million PS5 platforms worldwide through the end of 2020.
This means 3.3 million units were shipped from January to March, giving an idea of Sony’s current manufacturing capacity, as the PS5 is still very difficult to buy and demand far outpaces supply.
The reason for the quarterly decline is likely due to Sony’s increase in production before the system launch.
And earlier this month, He said NPD: The PS5 was the fastest-selling console in US history within the first five months of its availability, both in terms of units shipped and total dollar spend.
And in the first quarter of 2021, Nintendo sold more Nintendo Switch units in the United States than Sony did from the PS5.
And this isn’t surprising given how hard it has been to find the PS5 since its initial launch batch.
Sony also shipped an additional 1 million PS4 platforms in the last quarter, bringing the current number of this system to 115.9 million units.
Sony’s report indicates that the PS5 is selling slightly faster than the PS4 worldwide, having shipped up to 7.6 million PS4 units as of March 31, 2014.
