This comes after Samsung revealed that its latest Galaxy S21 Ultra will be the first phone in the Galaxy S series to support its S Pen.
The S Pen has always been limited to Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones, as it comes with its flagship Galaxy Note phone along with some mid-range tablets, but this is no longer the case in 2021.
While the app is slightly different, it raises the question of what this means for the future of the S Pen, as Samsung is introducing the stylus as a separate accessory for the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
The device does not have a place to store the pen internally like the Galaxy Note phones, and you need to purchase a separate case to attach it.
It’s also not the same S Pen that you get with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, nor does it offer the same functionality, as there are no Air Actions and no control over Bluetooth.
Tae Moon Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile division, said in the statement: We are committed to creating new mobile experiences that flow smoothly and continuously to make consumers’ lives easier and better.
He added: We have made a bold decision to extend the stylus experience to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, and plan to expand the stylus experience across additional device categories in the future.
The term additional device categories are vague in themselves, but given that the stylus is compatible with some Samsung smartphones and tablets, the next logical category of devices that can use the S Pen will be Samsung’s foldable devices.
Recall that this is not the first suggestion by Samsung that support for the S Pen may reach other devices, as Roh said in a month Last December: The company is paying attention to people’s favorite aspects of the Galaxy Note experience and is excited to add some of its favorite features to other devices in our lineup, although this is not more specific.
Roh has also hinted that the S Pen is coming to foldable devices, and in a Q&A during the August Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Z Fold 2 presentation, Roh left the door wide open to the idea that the S Pen would make its way into foldable devices in the future.
Roh said: The S Pen has always been a favorite feature of the Galaxy Note, and we’re glad to hear that people want it so much and even want it in foldable devices.
Later, after re-emphasizing the features of the Galaxy Z Fold 2: We definitely continue to listen to our customers’ feedback, so please keep an eye out for what the future holds.
