Revealed French company Car maker Renault announced on Thursday a new concept for electric cars with a sportier design, as the company bets on mid-size family cars to try to improve its ailing auto market.
Under the new CEO (Luca de Meo), the losing company aims to narrow its focus on its more profitable models and drive up prices, as well as achieve a major boost in electric cars.
The company’s latest car – the Megane eVision – includes large SUV-style wheels, but with a smaller design. Renault said: It will be a pillar of the “compact” segment that it wants to expand, and it will be more profitable than smaller cars.
“A whole new generation of electric cars will come full of innovation,” de Meo said in a statement before the model’s presentation.
Renault was already grappling with faltering sales before the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, while at the same time trying to revive a strained relationship with Japanese partner Nissan.
The new electric vehicle will be the first to be built on the CMF-EV platform, or the vehicle architecture jointly developed by Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi.
Renault added that the final production model of the new electric car will be unveiled in 2021, noting that the company is already building another small electric car, the Zoe.
Sources had previously told Reuters that De Meo – who took office in July and is due to present his strategy in January – was keen to build on the famous Renault Megane range.
In terms of electric cars as well, Mercedes revealed Earlier this month, last October, it unveiled a batch of new electric cars based on a scalable architecture; It allows the automaker to customize its production for a variety of vehicle types and shapes.
