The popular media and live hosting platform Plex has begun testing integration with the Apple TV app, and after fully developed this feature allows users to find Plex content through the TV app across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV devices.
The TV app serves multiple purposes, and one of those purposes is to act as a hub for content from other streaming apps.
The Apple TV application can display content from applications such as: Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, making it easy to track what you watch in one application, and then go to individual applications to actually watch the content.
A Twitter user spotted Plex testing of integration with the Apple TV app, and TV app integration featured in the latest beta of TestFlight for the popular platform’s media and live hosting app.
Screenshots of the feature show a prompt to connect Plex to the Apple TV app, with an on-screen language stating that the participating app shares what you watch with Apple.
This means that the content you have in Plex appears in the TV app and in places like the Up Next menu.
Operations, searches, purchases, and device trust are used to personalize your experience, improve the experience of others, send you notifications, and prevent fraud.
The integration doesn’t seem to be fully rolled out yet, as a Twitter user explained that the content he stored via his Plex server doesn’t consistently show up for playback through the TV app.
Obviously, one possibility here is that Plex plans to merge the content it offers through the streaming service with the TV app only, not the content users store via their servers.
Plex launched its ad-supported live streaming service in 2019, offering users a variety of free TV shows and movies.
It may be that the service plans to make this content available through the TV app only, and not user-hosted content from individual servers.
And theHe said Plex employee via Reddit: This feature only works with free on-demand movies and TV shows, and we’d like to integrate personal media as well but that’s not technically possible for two reasons.
