Leaf changed the way the world viewed electric cars, and the launch of the first electric vehicle on the mass market in 2010 was a bet, but Nissan was – and still is – committed to electric vehicles.
Nissan has sold 500,000 Leaf vehicles worldwideAlthough it is not the world’s best-selling electric vehicle.
Since then, several other automakers have produced electric cars, with Tesla being the most prominent.
With continuous improvement in battery capacity, performance and efficiency, LEAF has evolved from a city passenger car into a multi-use vehicle that meets a wide range of customer needs and lifestyles.
Nissan also reported that a car owner named Shannon Monroe, one of the first people in the United States to buy the Leaf, still owned it and had driven it without fuel for more than 125,000 miles in the past decade.
Nissan currently sells the Leaf in 59 markets worldwide, and makes the electric vehicle in the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom.
Beyond design and features, one important change is the improvement in driving range That has come to Leaf over the course of the decade.
Today, some electric hybrids, such as the Leaf, can drive on electricity alone.
While celebrating the 10th anniversary of the launch of its first electric vehicle, Nissan also talked about the future, and the company has a new electric vehicle called Ariya on the way.
Nissan pledges that the car will have ample interior space, and a flat floor, with a range of 300 miles per charge.
The Ariya’s 300-mile driving range is stated by Nissan, not the official driving range estimated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and as Porsche and Taycan found out, the manufacturer’s estimates aren’t always accurate.
Nissan plans to sell 1 million electric cars annually by 2023, including all-electric and hybrid vehicles that use the e-POWER powertrain.
