And according to the company, it’s been a good two years for the Nintendo Switch, where The Switch family saw the strongest sales in October so far in the country this year.
The gaming tablet has been the best-selling game console in the United States for the past 23 months, outperforming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
It surpassed overall sales of the gaming platform 68.3 million worldwide – NES platform sales.
Nintendo sold more than 735,000 Switch and Switch Lite platforms in the US during the month of October, while it has so far sold 22.5 million units in the US.
The company says: This represents an increase of 136 percent compared to the same month last year “We’re excited about our momentum,” says Nick Chavez, vice president of sales and marketing for Nintendo America.
Chávez attributes the large increase in October to better out-of-stock supplies, as it has often been difficult to find the Switch on store shelves this year in particular.
The demand was compounded by the pandemic and the massive success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which saw the company witness unprecedented demand for the Nintendo Switch year-round.
The timing of the announcement is interesting as this week also saw the launch of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.
As the holiday season approaches, competition increases, which could lead to Nintendo Switch losing the title of the best-selling game console in the United States over the past 23 months.
Nintendo has a few big releases to boost its success, including Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.
The company believes it does not have to enter direct competition with Sony and Microsoft.
Chavez says: “It is always exciting for new gaming consoles to enter the video game market, and it is great for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X to come to the market, and we believe that the Nintendo Switch occupies a completely different position, and has a unique offering for shoppers and gamers.”
