Facing platform Netflix has boycotted campaigns alongside angry reactions on social media after the French movie “Cuties” premiered on the streaming platform.
The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and its story centers on an 11-year-old girl who lives in Paris who wants to join a dance group of three other girls from her neighborhood.
Despite her conservative upbringing and the strict rules of her Senegalese family, she revolts against her parents and joins the band.
The movie poster in the US sparked internet outrage in August, with critics saying it was highlighting the sexualization of girls and young women.
Thousands of people called for a boycott of the movie, and boycott campaigns escalated with hashtag CancelNetflix # On Twitter, but the live streaming service urged critics to watch the movie.
The platform lost $ 9 billion of its market value after launching a hashtag CancelNetflix #One person said: It takes years to build a reputation, but it takes minutes to demolish it.
A Netflix spokesperson said in a statement: The film is a social illustration against the sexualization of young children, it is award winning and explains the pressure young girls face on social media and from society in general, and we encourage anyone interested in these issues to watch it.
Politicians released public statements against Netflix and the movie itself, and the National Center for Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) and Parents’ Television Council released (PTCStatements regarding the film earlier this week condemn the platform’s broadcast of the movie.
Texas Rep, Matt Schaefer (Matt Schaefer), A tweet about the film, in which he wrote: I asked the Texas Attorney General’s office to investigate the film for potential violations of child exploitation and child pornography laws.
Senator Josh Hawley wrote:Josh Hawley) Wrote to the CEO of Netflix, calling for the immediate removal of the film from the streaming platform.
And urges petition On (change.org), more than 600,000 people signed it to cancel their Netflix subscriptions because of the movie, which many say: Its content is inappropriate.
The petition says: Netflix is no longer the family-friendly live streaming service.
